Biography
Professor of Philosophy at Cégep Ahuntsic and Associate Researcher at the CRÉ.
My research focuses primarily on moral psychology, animal ethics, and the ethics of artificial intelligence. My PhD in philosophy (Université de Montréal) examined how imagination can enrich moral knowledge, a thesis developed in my first book L’imagination en morale (Hermann, 2014). During my postdoctoral fellowship at McGill University, I explored our moral perception of nonhuman animals in Voir son steak comme un animal mort : véganisme et psychologie morale (Lux, 2015). I then co-founded L’Amorce, a journal dedicated to anti-speciesist thought. From 2017 to 2024, I was a researcher in AI ethics at the Université de Montréal, affiliated with the Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO) and the Centre de recherche en éthique (CRÉ). In this context, I published Faire la morale aux robots : une introduction à l’éthique des algorithmes (Atelier 10, 2020; Flammarion, 2021), as well as numerous articles. Since 2025, I have been teaching philosophy at the Cégep.
In normative ethics, I am particularly interested in how to correctly program artificial intelligence systems (applications, robots, LLMs). Which moral theories should guide us? What are the difficulties or obstacles involved in embedding values, norms, or virtues into artificial moral agents? I argue, among other things, that virtue ethics—mobilizing supervised learning—can offer a useful framework for programming moral decision-making in certain types of robots. More broadly, my approach to applied AI or algorithmic ethics seeks to take into account empirical findings from moral psychology. I also strive to make these analyses and reflections accessible not only to researchers but also to a broader audience.
